I am not a racist. I think that our country has gone so far to repay the debt of slavery, that they have forced "non-minorities" into a situation where they are being punished for the color of their skin.

Lets start with the obvious. Black history month. Its an unfair, racist celebration. I fully understand that slavery was wrong, but it was not the only thing that wrong nor was it the worst thing to happen in American history. Its not fair to every other race involved in the world. What about the Native Americans? They had their land stolen, were forced to leave all that they knew, were killed off because of land, and forced to live in small camps. Hmmm, sound familiar? Most people dont even think about them anymore. But they have suffered the most in this country. Where is their month?

Another thing that angers me is reparations. Everyone knows that slavery sucked. No question about it. But you also have to look at it from a modern view. If black slaves were not brought over here, where would todays Africa-American public be? Still in Africa, where disease runs rampant, education is useless, food is scarce, medical attention almost obsolete. Yet here, they prosper.

On that same note, "minorities" have many rights that "non-minorities" (ie white people)could never have. There is an entire organization just for black people. But if whites were to start an organization for the betterment of their race, it would instantly be shot down as racist and forced to shut down. Scholarships. African- Americans have ready made college chances. There are funs made specifically for black college students. You could never set up a scholarship just for white people. This state of reverse racism has even crept into television. B.E.T. Black entertainment television. Where is the white entertainment television? Now I know what a lot of people are gonna say about this. Yes, there are things that are more often white than not, but its not exclusive to white people. Everyone has a chance to participate in these things.

Just something to think about.

Why did Abraham Lincoln free the slaves??

During a debate last night between my boyfriends family they came to the conclusion the majority of the reason Lincoln freed the slaves was so that they would fight in the war with them. I hope this was not the main reason, but unfortunalty I think they are right. But I am not history guru so I am hoping someone has a much better answer for me!

Sorry if I offended anyone.

But I want to get your thoughts on the need for black history month. Why do we still need it? Why isn't black history simply included with regular history studies? If we can mandate a back history month, certainly we can mandate the inclusion of the contribution of black people into traditional history classes.

And are black only events helping bridge the racial divide or to perpetuate it? We have black history month, black music awards, black Miss America etc. The last time I watched any traditional award shows, people of all ethnicities were well represented. I don't think anyone is excluded from them anymore.

What do you think?

Should there be a "black history month"?

There is quite alot of debate about whether there should be a black history month. I have seen reasons why there should be, and reasons why there shouldn't be. So, I decided to get openions from my fellow myLottians. So...

Why should they be the only race to "acknowledge" their history. Every race has a history so I totally disagree with there being a black history month.
What is your opinion on this subject?

Book "Restoration"--

Great book. slow moving at first, but it brings home the point that issues of 60 years ago are still relevant today. If you dislike prejudice, or want to understand unrequited love of a different sort, or have to do a school report on segregation, this is your book. It's too bad the main mural is not real. Or was it?
Grab this one only if you can handle a book that makes you think.

I'm not offended by the practice of religion, of hey, if a person wants to pray, then go right ahead; you're not stepping on my toes by praying.
However, there is a line that should not be crossed when it comes to religion, and that line is drawn in the first amendment with this clause:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, nor prohibiting the free excercise thereof..."

Wanna pray? That's cool, do it wherever and whenever you want. However, this is America, and you do not need a governmentally endorsed day to pray to whatever God or philosophical force you worship. Somehow, though, good ol' Harry S. Truman thought is was necessary to sign a specific day of prayer into a law for the United States back in 1952. It's not enough that you can drop down to your knees and pray to (insert deity here) any time you want...somehow the U.S needed an actual government endorsed day of prayer.

The problem is, the government isn't supposed to make laws concerning religion, period. It should neither restrict nor endorse any religion or religions. Yet despite this rule that was set by our American forefathers in 1787, America had to go and make a law respecting the establishment of several religions...and somehow this has gone unchanged for over 50 years.

If U.S. citizens want to pray, then they have every right to do it whenever and wherever they want - this is guaranteed by the first amendment. So why is the government violating this same amendment by signing into law a national day of prayer?

Feb., Black History Month, The Whole Month - Why? Martin Luther King Has a Day!

Recently there was a discussion that broke my spirit and my heart. If it could affect an old white woman in this manner, can you imagine how it must have felt to all of the young black people here on MyLot? I cannot.
In one of my discussions I used the phrase "people of color", and a white person responded with an oft heard phrase, "If they are people of color, does that make me invisible?" To that I replied, "What color does Band-Aid mean when it says Flesh-Colored on the package"? All of these little things bog us down and keep us down. They get in the way.
Yes, by God and Goddess, there should be a Black History month, and an Chinese History month, and Japanese History month, and a Mexican History month, and on and on. American was and is known as the Melting Pot of the world - the spot where people came to from all destinations. None of us are PURE AMERICANS. We all have come from some other heritage.
During this, the shortest month of all, that has been dedicated to Black History, I am imploring my African American Sisters and Brothers;
-Please add to this discussion
-Please tell some of your personal history
-Please tell some of your ancient history
-Please tell some Black History
-Please contribute to this discussion to prove that Black History Month is a month to Celebrate with Glory and Pride.
I ask this not for the pennies that it will give to my account; but for my 12-year old granddaughter. She is black but has had no daddy in her life since she was born. Her white family has had to be the source of all her African American History. I implore you to help me. Give me some new stories and some new truths to assist her when she is called the "n" word (as she has been many times), without feeling the need for violence (as it has caused her to get into physical battles). I wish for nothing more than her to stand tall and proud, knowing that her heritage is one of elegance, knowledge, ethics, and strong family roots and morals. Thank you so much.~Donna

How rife is racism in America?

Is racism being contained in America or is it reducing.
I live in Lusaka, Zambia (in Africa). This time of the year many of us visit the Martin Luther King Jr Library (aka The American Information Center). Good place with a fine catalogue of publications. But in February, it is a hub of culture, they call it Black History Month.
After looking at the exhibition and listening to all the talk, one ends up having more questions than answers.
I wish to know, how rife is racism in America, especially between white people and black people? Is it on the decline or is it rising by the day?
