I have large boobs and the mammogram machine is just cruel. After my second mammogram earlier this year I just HAD to write a poem about the experience.. My Poor Boobies Oh darlin' I'm felin' tender And I'm very very sore My poor boobies got mammogramed today It's somethin' they have never done before They have been squished in all directions And then squashed as pancake flat And it sure didn't help my boobs To be nice and round and fat The contraption they call a mammogram Is an inhumane type of machine? It wrangles them and tangles them Beyond the wildest nighttime dream So hoist up boobie number one And plop it in the inhumane jaws Twist and squirm a little please While the nurse records the scores Stretch just a wee bit further round dear You're being brave and doing so well You sweetly smile and wish that the silly nurse Would leave you alone in your private hell Now let's have boobie number two She sweetly says to me Just haul it up and flop it down Right there in front of me That wasn't so bad she says to me As she pats me on the shoulder Doesn't she understand that my poor boob? But I think it's a meaningful way to remind us of the importance of getting a Mammogram. I remember that they really went flat, I try and forget about that. Then I remember it's for the best, So I go and get the test. It just takes a little time, To check out those boobs of yours and mine to make sure everything is fine. Self checking just once a month is all it takes, With a peace of mind, what a difference it makes. I was diagnosed in the summer of 2005 at the age of 24. I had a mastectomy, 6 FEC chemo treatments and now take tamoxifen daily for prevention. A common theme I found in the profiles of the 2 girls is that they are young and are looking for others to connect with that are dealing with the same issues. Rather than message to both gals I though I would post a new discussion and hopefully other looking for this info as well will be helped. Young Survival Coalition is the place that I found really helped me during my breast cancer journey. On their website they have message boards that are divided up into topics like treatment, reconstruction, fertility, excercise, and even a metastatic board. Everyone there is really welcoming and it is all girls who have been through it or are going through it. It was a source of inspiration for me to read about how they got through some rough times and I learned some tips too about parenting and relationship issues that are relevant to us undergoing treatment and illness. I always felt confident that I would recieve helpful answers when I posted a question. Every year YSC hosts conference for young women and their caregivers, Last year it was in Denver and I was still in treatment and could not attend. This year I am going to it in Arlington Virginia in February. I am really excited to meet some of the girtls taht I corresponded with on the boards and learning about the newest in advocacy, treatments and reconstruction. www.youngsurvival.org To find the boards go to the community link on the left hand side, under community choose bulletin board. You can create a user account and post messages and paste pictures. I hope you ladies check it out and find it helpful. Let me know what you think of it. I know it was a great place for me to connect with other young women and to get information from girls who had been through what I was just beginning.
