When political combatants lose their worthy opponents, they also sing their praises. So this discussion is not about Ted Kennedy's faults or personal problems. There's time for that and I wouldn't talk badly about him at this sensitive time for those who care for him and admired him. But admiration must also have its limits.

This post by Melissa Lafsky on the Huffington Post goes a bit too far in my opinion, when it suggests that the death of MaryJo Kopechne was all worth it - if it meant Ted Kennedy having a glorious career in the Senate.

This is from the post by Melissa Lafsky:

"But in all the florid or scalpel-sharp prose, there's one constant: Peeking out from the center of the story is the matter of his playing a major part in the death of a 28-year-old woman.

Mary Jo wasn't a right-wing talking point or a negative campaign slogan. She was a dedicated civil rights activist and political talent with a bright future -- granted, whenever someone dies young, people sermonize about how he had a "bright future" ahead of him -- but she actually did. She wasn't afraid to defy convention (28 and unmarried, oh the horror!) or create her own career path based on her talents. She lived in Georgetown (where I grew up) and loved the Red Sox (we'll forgive her for that). Then she got in a car driven by a 36-year-old senator with an alcohol problem and a cauldron full of demons, and wound up a controversial footnote in a dynasty.

We don't know how much Kennedy was affected by her death, or what she'd have thought about arguably being a catalyst for the most successful Senate career in history. What we don't know, as always, could fill a Metrodome.

Still, ignorance doesn't preclude a right to wonder. So it doesn't automatically make someone (aka, me) a Limbaugh-loving, aerial-wolf-hunting NRA troll for asking what Mary Jo Kopechne would have had to say about Ted's death, and what she'd have thought of the life and career that are being (rightfully) heralded.

Who knows -- maybe she'd feel it was worth it. "
--

First of all, how did MaryJo Kopechne's death serve as a "catalyst" for Ted Kennedy's Senate career? If anything, the incident at Chappaquiddick could have ended his political career and if he were anyone else, it could have ended in an indictment.

The occasions of Ted's death and the days following are not the time to bring up things like Chappaquiddick or any other personal scandal from his life and I think that most of his political adversaries have been considerate of his family by not delving deeply into any of them. But for someone to go this far to excuse them is absolutely unconscionable.

As MaryJo clawed at the upholstery of the back seat of that car, struggling for the last few breaths from the shrinking air pocket, probably hoping against hope that someone would arrive to save her, I really doubt that had she been asked if it was worth this suffering and her death if it meant that Ted Kennedy would enjoy a long Senate career that she would have contentedly said "yes".

This post beyond belief, and the only good thing I can say about it is thankfully, MaryJo's parents are both dead and they won't have to see such tripe.

Shocking, right? How malicious can one woman be that she would have her lawyer threaten to emotionally scar little children?

The comments from the usual suspects go on and on about how Palin doesn't believe in First Amendment rights, because her lawyer is planning a libel suit against the blogger who wrote that she is getting a divorce. But is this really an accurate story?

Of course not, it's the Huffington Post. Seriously, you expected anything but slanted reporting?

The actual letter from Palin's attorney enumerates the many lies that the blogger published along with his statement that "nothing written above should be considered rumor". That statement is his assurance to his reader that all his information is the truth.

Except, it isn't. At least not according to Palin.

Let me quote the letter from her attorney:

"Although it is likely you knew your statements were false when you published them, you are certainly on notice as of 1:00 pm AST that your alleged facts are false and hereafter constitute malice. By 3:00 pm today AST please post a retraction of your story with an apology for printing false and defamatory statements. In the event you refuse to do so, please give me the contact information for your attorney. If you do not have an attorney, please let me know if you want to be served with the summons and complaint at the kindergarten where you assist or at your residence."

The letter really says:
* it's possible you didn't know these statements were false but you do now, so from here on these statements constitute malice - but if you...
* print a retraction, we won't sue you
* give me the name of your attorney - in other words, I will contact him instead of you, which is standard practice
* if you don't have an attorney, do you want to be served at home or at work?

None of that part of the letter was quoted in the Huffington Post, just the phrase "if you want to be served with the summons and complaint at the kindergarten where you assist". Well, that does sound like a threat if you don't actually put it in context.

Contrary to the HuffPo's commenter's postings, free speech doesn't include defamation. Now, if you print something that is obvious opinion or is true, it can't be libel even if defamatory.

The point is, you can't believe everything you read, you must do the research. Taking the opinion of a blogger, or the Huffington Post or any other opinion outlet without checking facts is allowing yourself to be used by that outlet for the purposes of propaganda.

Huffington Post Article Attacks Palin's Son Trig

A lot of people are dismissing the idea that Sarah Palin might have resigned to save her family from the attacks they have suffered in the media but this article that was published in the Huffington Post is an example of just how low some of these people will sink.

The post, which was pulled off the site after it was discovered by the Free Republic, is entitled "Palin Will Run in '12 on More Retardation Platform". In the article, the author, Erik Sean Nelson, who is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post, shamelessly makes fun of everyone from Down's syndrome children to Wal-Mart greeters.

You can read the text of the article here:

If this article had been written by a conservative about a liberal politician or their family, there would have been a major outcry and a call for his firing at the very least. I don't know why this attack on a minority (developmentally disabled) is not labeled a hate crime.

Most importantly, it shows what depths of despicable behavior some on the left are capable of sinking to in order to attack Sarah Palin and her family. To go after the tiniest of them, and the least capable of defending himself - a baby - is the lowest form of cowardice I can imagine.

Can anyone tell me why this man should not be fired? Will those on the left speak out against this or will they find a way to excuse it?

Gov Palin Attorney Comes Out With Boxing Gloves On

Left wing liberal news media is about to get dam well deserved bloody noses if they mess again with the barracuda Sarah Palin.
Gov Palin has freed herself of chains the left wing media the mouth pieces for Barack Obama and their mean spirited blogger's have beat her with for almost one year, this is going to be really lot's of fun, read on.

(Sarah Palin's Attorney puts Huffington Post to MSNBC on notice)

Ratcheting up her offensive against the news media, Gov. Sarah Palin’s attorney threatened Saturday to sue mainstream news organizations if they publish “defamatory” stories relating to whether Palin is under federal investigation.

In an extraordinary four-page letter, Alaska-based attorney Thomas Van Flein warns of severe consequences should speculation that until now has largely been confined to blogs about whether Palin embezzled funds in the construction of a Wasilla, Alaska, sports arena find its way into print.

“This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law,” Van Flein warned, citing Alaska liberal blogger Shannyn Moore.

Much like Palin did in her Facebook statement Saturday, Van Flein savages the news media in his letter.

“Just as power abhors a vacuum, modern journalism apparently abhors any type of due diligence and fact checking before scurrilous allegations are repeated as fact,” the Anchorage attorney wrote.

Neither the Times or the Post made any mention of the embezzlement rumors in their Saturday editions, but sources close to Palin consider the letter a warning shot to stay away from the topic.

In the letter, Van Flein writes: “‘The Alaska Constitution protects the right of free speech, while simultaneously holding those “responsible for the abuse of that right.’… These falsehoods abuse the right to free speech; continuing to publish these falsehoods of criminal activity is reckless, done without any regard for the truth, and is actionable.”

I stumbled across this little gem from a McCain supporter posted in a discussion thread over at Huffington Post. This is comment exactly as it was posted - the link to it links to the article on the page where the comment starts - the thread is one of the longest there.

3 for obama plan......is going in to action if he gets in......more businesses are joining every day......it will be funny as he11......but Obama will create jobs yeah right......nov 5 each business will lay off 3 people......then pass the hours off on remaining EMPs......some businesses state that it will take up to 1 week to not be so obvious about it

Further on in the thread, the poster claims that the so-called 3 for obama plan is being spread in email among businesses with 20 employees or more, and that it is "tough love for America" to teach them a lesson for electing Obama. He also goes on to detail how he busted up his shop when the workers started thinking about unionizing and now no one "dares" to mention union around his workers any more. He goes into more detail here:

ohio is an at will state.....EMPs can be fired for any reason as long as the EMP is not a protected class.....in some firings you do not even have to give any reason.....My attorney stated i could give ob imminent taxes as reason....i have already trimmed all family and highly paid EMPs from the rolls.....i will pay them will dividends......payroll dollars just were cuts amazingly....now unemployment tax worker comp and my share of the social security.....the EMPs save on SSI, city tax.....

there is a rumor started at the shop that if obama gets in bonuses with stop because of all the taxes he will implement and that i will cancel all health insurance.....I have not answered anyone on it yet......however i have changed the bonus date to Jan 21, 2009.....you should hear the EMPs discussion about obama now.... the rumors has spread to my other location.....

oh boy i just wish i knew who started that rumor

we will see what the unemployment rate is if obama gets in. we will see.

This guy sounds like a real winner. Just the kind of guy I want to be creating new jobs for the country. Anyone else heard anything about a "3 for obama plan" or about other intimidation tactics?

news website

Which is the best website for latest news??
