Let me explain. I was a difficult child. I don't mean deliberately contrary, though I'm sure I had my moments. But I was a very colicky baby for the first 8 months of my life. At 8 months, I went from rolling to running and climbing. I was into everything. At 15 months I was speaking in sentences, which no doubt involved a fair amount of talking back. By age 5, if not earlier, I was pretty mouthy. I did things with scissors and I don't know what all kind of mischief I got into. The baby sitters all hated me. And my parents had three more children all in the space of less then 5 years.

It occurred to me that the reason I tend to make peace and smooth things over and avoid conflicts is simply that I am afraid of anger. Why am I afraid of anger? I think it's because a lot of the attention that I got from my parents when I was little was anger. I am now learning better how to deal with that.

But what I wonder is whether there was a lot of parental anger directed at me when I was really little, too little to remember. Do you think a baby or a toddler remembers things like that at some level? Or is that just a bunch of foolishness and I should go take a walk and have a brownie? The reason is really a selfish reason. Because i want to be able to understand my dramas. English subs come in a day later or sometimes a week later than the broadcast of the show. And i'm impatient. *grinz*

As of now, i can differentiate the 2 languages. But i've yet to really understand.

Well, that's me.

What about you?

What language do you want to learn and why?

There are so many different places in the world where it is spoken. So far in my life I have been to the Canary Islands that are owned by Spain, Mexico and Guatemala.

Have you ever been to a Spanish speaking place? If so where?
Would you like to visit a country where Spanish is spoken? If so where?

What is your motivation to learn another language?

I just heard from a friend that he is studying and learning Nihongo. I asked him why? He told me he just want to understand the language, because of the Japanese anime movies he is watching. He is tired reading the subtitles below the movies and he decided its better to learn it.
It's funny but its true. We also have Spanish language as part of our schooling because of our country relationship with our former country colonizer, Spain. Another popular language people are learning are Koreans and Chinese, because of possibly working on those countries.
English is our second language because of it's international use. I guess there will be more demand for learning other languages if there is a need for it. Are there other reason to learn different language aside from you need it to communicate?

Inauguration Slip?

I watched the inauguration along with millions of other TV viewers and thought it was extremely well planned and Obama was flawless in all aspects of the historical occasion. However I do not see why in the first few words of prayer, led by Rick Warren, he had to say that Obama is the son of an immigrant. He is NOT because his father Obama, Sr. was never an immigrant to the USA. He came to the US on a student visa.

Why did Warren have to say something that was not correct? I think it was enough of an unforgettable event to be the first African/American president without adding "son of an immigrant". Surely this prayer would have been reviewed by Obama's staff before being given?

Even Obama changed an ad during his campaign removing the word immigrant
Obama radio, updated, and without 'immigrant' father
The Obama campaign sends over a corrected script to its new Spanish-language radio ad, which doesn't label is father an "immigrant," as the original script did.

I was an immigrant when I first came to the States and I know the huge difference between a student visa and immigrant visa. Why was this slip allowed.?

Definition of Non-Immigrant Visa:
Non-immigrant visas are issued to the citizens of other countries coming to the United States temporarily. To be precise, aliens traveling to the United States for a temporary intention are categorized under U.S. law as non-immigrants (or temporary visitors). The law requires that these people provide confirmation that they don’t plan to immigrate to the United States.A non-immigrant visa permits an alien to travel to the U.S. port-of-entry (e.g. airport) and request consent of the Department of Homeland Security immigration inspector to enter the United States.
A nonimmigrant visa holder’s stay in USA must be for a limited period of time and restricted to the activity or reason for which his or her visa was issued. As these visas are temporary, the applicants must show:The financial resource of support while in the United States
Intent to return to the home country.
There are several non-immigrant visa categories available. The type of visa required is defined by immigration law, and relates to the purpose of your journey. For example, there are special visas for vocational students, religious workers, musicians, athletes, performers, and many more.

I think it is a great language to learn and it is not too difficult either. I have been to Mexico a couple of times and think that it most be a great destination for Americans because it is so near them. I have also been to Guatemala and it is a very cheap country. Accommodation there is cheap. I stayed in a room at Tikal and in a room overlooking a lake for bargain prices. I would love to go to see more of Central America and go to South America as well. Spanish is also spoken in Europe. I have visited the Canary Islands, that belong to Spain, and are in the Atlantic Ocean.

Have you been to a Spanish speaking country?
If so which one?
If not which would you like to go to?

Should our children have to learn a second language in School?

I think that it should be optional for children to learn a second language in school. Pres. Obama wants all children all the way through grade school to not only know their regular studies, but also learn spanish. I personally think that this is outrageous. Our children have enough studies to learn, and things to worry about, rather then having to learn spanish. English is the language of this country. That is why I don't feel that our children should have to learn spanish, when everyone who lives in this country should know how to speak english. Disappointingly not everyone in this country speaks english, which is forcing our children to have to adapt to the spanish language, since not everyone speaks english.

What is your opinion on this topic? Should our children have to learn spanish in school? What is your opinion on all the non-english speaking people in this country? Are you offended by them wanting to force a language on to our children?

easy to learn?
